Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality (EPMM)

Key Wins:
- A renewed focus on preventing maternal mortality rate led to organize multi sectoral National EPMM dialogue, which identified Pakistan’s top three EPMM priorities and facilitated the formation of National and Provincial EPMM.
- Technical Advisory and Accountability Groups (TAAGs). Additionally, we conducted a landscape analysis of EPMM to assess the implementation status of EPMM nationwide. (notification, landscaping).

Project Brief:
The “Strategies toward Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality (EPMM)” report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015 outlined a comprehensive roadmap aimed at reducing maternal mortality rates during the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) era spanning from 2015 to 2030. This roadmap, crafted in collaboration with stakeholders worldwide, underscores evidence-based methodologies and a human rights perspective, with the objective of addressing disparities in access, quality, and outcomes of maternal and newborn healthcare on both national and global scales.
Subsequent to the publication of the EPMM Strategies report, the Global EPMM Working Group embarked on the task of devising a robust monitoring framework to gauge progress toward the attainment of EPMM strategic objectives and priority actions. Recognizing the pivotal role of a strong monitoring framework in guiding strategic decision-making for national governments and showcasing the efficacy of investments, it was decided to undertake this endeavor. Supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and spearheaded by the Women and Health Initiative (W&HI) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, on behalf of the EPMM Working Group, the Improving Maternal Health Measurement Capacity and Use (IMHM) project endeavors to enhance maternal health measurement capacity by formulating and validating indicators that align with global standards. Moreover, the project aims to promote the adoption and utilization of these indicators through tailored engagement and assistance to countries.
Building upon this initiative, the Forum for Safe Motherhood-White Ribbon Alliance Chapter-Pakistan convened a dialogue session as part of a broader series of seven dialogues organized by the White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) and the Family Care International Program of Management Sciences for Health (FCI-MSH), under the auspices of the IMHM project. The primary objective of the dialogue was to gather insights from diverse stakeholders regarding national priorities for the adoption of EPMM indicators and to facilitate their seamless integration and utilization to drive progress towards the EPMM Strategies. Additionally, the dialogue served to shine a spotlight on critical social and systemic determinants influencing maternal health and survival within the framework of national policies, plans, and initiatives.
